The timing that actually matters

Back-to-school is one of the few retail seasons where waiting is reliably rewarded, but only for some categories. The season splits into three distinct windows:

• Mid-July to early August — the widest selection, the weakest discounts. Buy here only if you need a specific item in a specific size.

• The two weeks before Labour Day — peak loss-leader pricing on basic supplies. Notebooks, pens, glue, and binders hit their annual low, often below a dollar, because stores use them to pull families in.

• The two weeks after Labour Day — clearance. Whatever is left gets cut hard. This is the cheapest moment of the year for backpacks, lunch bags, and children's clothing, and the worst for selection.

Supplies: buy the loss leaders, ignore the bundles

The basic supply categories are sold at or below cost during the pre-Labour-Day window, and the discounts are genuine. Dollarama, Walmart Canada, and Staples all run them; Real Canadian Superstore and No Frills carry a narrower range at similar prices.

Pre-assembled "school kits" and bundles are usually the exception. They are convenient, but they bundle low-margin loss leaders with higher-margin filler and are frequently more expensive than buying the same list piecemeal during the same week.

One genuinely useful habit: buy two years of consumables when the loss-leader pricing hits. Paper and pens do not expire, and the same items cost several times more in February.

Laptops, tablets, and the education-pricing shortcut

For computing, the seasonal sale is rarely the best route. Apple, Best Buy Canada, Microsoft, Lenovo, and Dell all operate education pricing for Canadian students and teachers, and it typically holds year-round rather than for a two-week window.

The right comparison is education price against seasonal sale price, not sale price against regular price. Education pricing often wins outright, and where it does not, it can sometimes be combined with a trade-in or a gift-card promotion.

If a student is entering a program with software requirements — engineering, design, or anything with a specified spec sheet — check the institution's own requirements before buying. Departmental minimum specs change, and a machine bought a month early to a guessed spec is the most expensive mistake in this category.

Clothing and footwear: wait

Children's clothing is the clearest case for patience in the entire season. Prices in July and August reflect full seasonal demand; the same items are marked down substantially in mid-September once the rush is over.

Buying one week's worth of clothing before school starts and the rest after Labour Day is a genuinely effective strategy — it avoids the peak, and it means buying after the child has actually started the year and their real needs are known.

Footwear is the exception worth spending on. Ill-fitting shoes are worn daily for a year, and the clearance discount does not compensate for a poor fit.
